The following takes place entirely on computer screens.

Lucia is still hungover from her high school’s Winter Formal as she boots up her laptop the next morning.
For the coming days she’s looking after her parent’s hotel, which borders on hiking trail The Narrows in Utah. Most rooms are empty as the year is drawing to an end, perfect timing for her parents to leave on a well-earned holiday. All Lucia has to do is fill her time behind the lobby’s desk. It’s like a social media bender.

Feature Film Synopsis

To her dismay her fellow students didn’t take a liking to the performance of Lucia’s band last night. As the negative comments are piling up, she decides to use her fake online profiles to reply to the haters.
Lucia uses headshots of former hotel guests to pretend she’s someone else on Instagram and Facebook. She creates a new account that morning, he’s called Dean and his photo is one of the hikers the hotel welcomed over the summer.

Lucia’s best friend and fellow band member Tom also notices the comments and they discuss it on FaceTime. One of the haters is Tom’s sister Jenna, ringleader of the popular clique at their school, a group Lucia has never been part of.

To Lucia her fake online profiles are a way to handle the isolation and bullying she experiences at school. Completely out of nowhere Dean starts talking to Lucia, surprising enough it is coming from the fake profile - as if he hacked into it. First Dean asks for an explanation: Why are you using my picture?
Soon enough they both realise they have certain things in common and Lucia opens up to him about her life. He empathises with her, as she reveals more details about the hotel and the bullies tormenting her online.

The next morning the night guard disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Lucia tries to trace his steps and witnesses him fleeing the premises on CCTV-footage. There are complaints from guests about noises late at night, but when Lucia looks for the cause she doesn’t find anything. What worries her is that school bully Jenna is apparently planning a visit to the hotel with her friend Rachel for New Year’s Eve.

Lucia trusts her new online friend Dean with her concerns, until she slowly starts to suspect that he’s closer than she thought… A check on his location places Dean specifically inside the hotel.

From here on Lucia doesn’t know who she can trust and starts to doubt her sanity. Is there someone roaming the hotel’s empty hallways at night? The security cameras catch glimpses of a strange person. Lucia starts suspecting one of the guests, the creepy crawler Bob Jenkins - who seems to pop up at the most random places and spies on her after dark.

That night panic rises as one of the guests reports someone stalking her. After a tense confrontation with this mysterious guy who was apparently living in the ceiling, the police arrest him. This prompts Lucia’s parents to return and they’re about to catch the first plane. They order Lucia to close down the hotel as they worry about her safety.

A blizzard is approaching and the roads around the hotel are being closed off. The hotel becomes more and more isolated. Tom helps Lucia to figure out who Dean is, after she comes clean about creating his profile using the guest’s picture. They do a deep dive in Dean’s past and make an exciting discovery: Dean’s laptop is still at the hotel, in the lost and found.

Dean’s laptop is a vortex of horror. Tom goes through it and links the content to disappearances of several young women over the past years. What if he wants to make a new victim in the hotel? Lucia is worried about Jenna and her friend Rachel… they might be Dean’s target. It’s as if he’s setting a trap for the girls.

An attempt from Lucia to stop Jenna and Rachel from coming to the hotel is met with distrust. In response, the girls post a video of Lucia online. This was filmed during the Winter Formal and shows a different side to our protagonist as she’s involved in a fierce fight with Rachel. It’s as if Lucia is a different person. As the two girls arrive at the hotel, Lucia begs them to take the video down - a request Jenna ultimately grants.

As Jenna and Rachel settle in the hotel for New Year’s Eve, Lucia starts to unravel the scheme that Dean is setting up. Tom is alarmed about his sister’s fate and sets out through the blizzard to save them. But will he be on time? Lucia finds out Dean’s filming in the girl’s hotel room as he shares the image on her laptop.

Rachel is lured into the lobby and gets killed on screen. The killer remains out of frame. Jenna is exploring the hotel and it looks like she’s being stalked by one of the hotel’s guests: Bob Jenkins. Jenna locks herself in the freezer and is later found in a hypothermic state. Her brother Tom was too late to save her.
Lucia is found unconscious in the hotel. It seems like Dean struck and stayed out of sight, before leaving the premises. All the evidence points to Bob Jenkins, as it’s revealed that he’s actually Dean’s father who seemingly wants to cover up the murder of his son by pretending that Dean is still active online.
Case closed… right?

Lucia wakes up in the hospital and boots up a broken laptop screen. A counselor has been appointed to ask her a couple of questions about what really went down in the hotel. Through a montage of collected screenshots, news items, online profiles and cctv-footage it’s revealed that between Lucia and Dean’s laptop something completely different was unfolding over the course of the weekend.

Lucia met Dean over the summer. This charming man was considered dangerous and authorities chased him through several states. He was hiding in The Narrows and he hit it off with Lucia. When he tried to assault her in one of the hotel rooms, something snapped in Lucia. It opened up a painful trauma from the past. Before she was adopted Lucia was abused for years. She started to dissociate and Dean’s assault was a trigger. Lucia’s personality started splitting.

Lucia killed Dean and adopted his personality. This went further than creating his online profile: she started to become Dean at certain moments (like her lashing out at the Winter Formal). That side of her personality wanted to protect Lucia from people who hurt her. Without her knowledge, that side of her personality started communicating with Lucia through Dean’s laptop and eventually lured the girls to the hotel, to get revenge on their bullying.

As Dean, we end the film - Lucia has departed from her own body as she mutters: “I always wanted to be someone else”. Her desire became reality as this dark side of her personality takes over.
