The mid-length was directed by david-jan bronsgeest and written by tim koomen. they partnered with prpl (ellen havenith) for the production, which is done under their horror label bloodrave.
it was part of a dutch anthology series, hosted by director martin koolhoven (brimstone) to stimulate dutch genre films.
binary had its world premiere during the international film festival rotterdam in february 2024 and its international premiere during fantastic fest (austin, tx) in september 2024.
The international rights to the mid-length are available.
A couple of other fun facts:
- binary was developed together with four transgender women in different stages of their transitions. the story of the main character nisha is partly based on the real life hijra past of lead actress inaya.
- all the violence inflicted on the perpetrators in the movie is based on actual violence against trans people in the past.
- the sFX Make up and explicit wounds have been made by rogier samuels, who also created the prosthetics and gore for the horror movies X and pearl by ti west.
- the intense color grading was done by peter bernaers. You might know him from another horror hit (famous for its intense color scheme): ‘mandy’ by panos Cosmatos.
- did you know binary wasn’t the only movie bloodrave released in 2024?
Only six months later their feature debut jimmy would hit the screen in the netherlands. departing from the heavy thematics of binary, this supernatural slasher took a lighter tone and was deliberately meant to be more camp and fun.
